We have a new place!

Posted on May 10th, 2009 by Tarina

Our search for a new apartment was a little rough. We visited several places and saw a lot of great examples of where we didn’t want to live. Many of the apartments were a bit run-down or just plain old. Most of them were okay, but nothing great. And some of them were in less-than-ideal neighborhoods.

It was also difficult to find places to go see. I searched many online listings and found decent places. We decided to use an agent to find our dream apartment, so we looked on this agency’s website. This is when we were introduced to the fact that apartments are renting damn fast. I perused the site, and found 22 properties. A lot of them looked amazing, and some of them looked pretty good. When it came time to see these listings, I was told that all but 4 of them were rented. And three of those were not what we were looking for (i.e. crapholes).

So, disheartened by lack of a good apartment, we drove up to the last place on the schedule for the morning. I liked the street immediately: one-way, tree-lined, quiet. Okay, so the El is right behind the property, but it’s not all that loud.
We go inside and immediately I can tell that this place is a cut above all the others. It’s a three-bedroom with new kitchen, bathroom, hardwood floors, and laundry in the unit. Yay! Here are a few pics. I didn’t take any on my tour because the real estate agent told me there was a virtual tour online. (Had I looked at the quality of that tour, I would have just taken my own pics, but c’est la vie. Here’s the link though it may be taken down soon)

07174372_1This is the living room, looking into the sun porch. This is the front of the building.

07174372_2This is the absolutely huge dining room. We’re not sure what we’re going to do with it yet.

07174372_3Nice, bright kitchen with a dishwasher. ;)

There are a lot of cool things about this place that aren’t apparent even in the virtual tour: there is a little brick patio in the back where we can have our grill. We may be able to do a little bit of gardening as well, though our landlord seems to maintain the flowers around the patio. We’ll have to see about that. And, there is enough space for a guest room! Yeah, there’s only one bathroom, but at least you’d have a nice room to yourself when you come visit!
Okay, so it’s not the perfect place: there is no central AC, no garage spot, and it’s more expensive with fewer amenities than our previous place. The hardwood floors and first-floor location make it a little noisy (as does the El), but we think it’s all worth it for the location! It’s really close to Lincoln Square, which has a lot of fun shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. We will be able to walk to the El in about 3 minutes, and Atkins’s work is only 4 stops down the line. Near to Atkins’s work (3 stops down) is an art studio/cafe where I am thinking about taking some classes this summer. It will be much more convenient and safer than going from Edgewater to Lincoln Park and then traveling back at 10 pm.

In short (too late) we are super excited about the move! That does mean, though, that we are going to have to put the anniversary party on the back burner. In fact, it will probably just become a housewarming party once we are all settled in. What does this mean for our first anniversary? Well, it may mean that we are going to be celebrating with wine and pizza in our new place surrounded by boxes.
That sounds pretty good to me! :D

Amazing photos from the distant past

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve slowly been pushing out all the photos I have on my computer to my flickr account. I’ve been pretty good about posting newer photos on flickr but now there is a lot of older stuff too.

Some of my new sets that people might find interesting are: Germany, San Francisco, San Antonio, Puerto Vallerta, Las Vegas and Glenwood Springs.

For a broader look at the photos I have online check out my flickr collections.

Pottery results

Posted on September 21st, 2008 by Tarina

I figured I should blog about how my pottery turned out. :) I got about 12 pieces back. Which sucks because I’m pretty sure I made 15, glazed 14 and I know of one that was “accidentally taken.” What makes me sad is the one that was picked up by someone else was a pretty cute pitcher. I used some blue and white glazes on it and was looking forward to seeing how it turned out. The teacher said it looked pretty cool.
I may have another piece floating out there somewhere, but I can’t think of it. Maybe I did only glaze 13. Oh well.
I had no idea what I was doing with the glazes because I missed the last class (I was in Colorado for Chris’s wedding). So, I just picked ones I liked and combos that I thought would look nice. If nothing else, I have a good idea of what the glazes do when I go back to create more.
In any case, here are the wheel-thrown pieces:

That shows pretty well what I did for those eight weeks. I succeeded mostly with bowls, which is why there are more bowls than other forms. :)
Here are a few closeups of my favorites:

Atkins and I call this one the guac bowl. We think that it would look especially lovely filled to the brim with delicious guacamole. Yum yum! Haven’t made any yet, but I will soon!

I really like the shape and the colors on this one. It’s just so bright and springy! Plus the little twists on the rim add visual interest. You can’t tell from the pic but it has a nice high foot on it so that makes it a little more fun.

This is my homage to my undergrad alma mater, University of Wyoming. Brown and Gold, baby! Haha. Actually, I just decided to try out these two glazes to see how they looked together. I am very happy with the result.

This last one is a set of matching tumblers that Atkins says are his favorite. :) They are pretty small. Too small to be useful for a decent-sized drink. So I’m not really sure what we’re going to do with them. I like how they turned out, though. The form is nice.

I’m hoping to go back and make bigger and better things. Unfortunately the intermediate/advanced class is on Wednesdays, which is the worst day for me to have class. My usual day off is Thursday so I’m normally at the clinic late on Wednesdays making sure everything is in order. I may try and switch days off for the spring semester so I can keep going.

I welcome comments and questions. Let me know if you like anything in particular. I’m pretty pleased how everything came out but I have to say that I have problems making large forms. None of my bowls is particularly big. I think I just need to practice more. I am a lot better at making pottery with even sides and good bottoms that aren’t too heavy. It’s all about improvements, I guess.
Thanks for looking!

Adult furniture, part two

Alrighty, then. I finally have some pics to show you. Right now, the old tv and entertainment center are hanging out in the middle of the living room, which is less than ideal. Hopefully we’ll have someone who wants those things take them away soon.

Okay, then. Here’s a pic of our new bookcases, all loaded up:

Nice, huh? They really hold all the books well, and we have room to grow! Which is good, because I’m always on the lookout for more books.
Here’s a pic of the new tv stand and new, spiffy tv. Atkins will post more of the details about it later. I just like it ’cause it’s pretty! Raika seems to like it as well.

So, this last pic shows you how everything fits together, which I think looks really good. It’s less cluttered and less dormroomish. And that’s always a plus.

That’s it, kids! So, if you know of anyone in the Chicago area that would like a tv or an entertainment center, just let us know! ;)

Professional pictures for all!

Hey, guys! So, I spoke with my photographer and she said that you should check out her website and check out the pics from the wedding. Once you’re there, you can look at all the pics (and there are a LOT of them) and order the ones that you like!
There are some very wonderful ones, and I hope you guys like them!

Let me know what you think!

Family Wedding Photos

Posted on July 2nd, 2008 by Atkins

Hello everyone, Atkins here…

I posted about 250 photos from Paul and Larry and Claudia on flickr today. We still don’t have the digital copies of our professional photos. You can look at our current collection of wedding photos or see Paul’s pictures or Larry and Claudia’s pictures separately. Once I’ve collected most of the wedding shots, I’ll make a new flickr set that just contains the best of the best photos.

In other news, I got soaked on my walk home from work today.  Usually I really like wet weather but today I was not a fan. Once I was home, I noticed that our nice new grill cover has mysteriously vanished. I can only assume that it was blown up and off the grill and is either in Lake Michigan or stuck on someones fence.

Even more wedding photos

Posted on June 29th, 2008 by Tarina

I just received access to the website where all the professional photographer’s digital photos are kept. Let me tell ya, it was a little overwhelming to look through all 785 of them, but I did it!
There were some really great ones! And of course, the obligatory eyes half-closed blinking pictures.
It was really fun to look through all the pics and see what the day looked like. Don’t get me wrong, I was there. I made conscious efforts to remember details and people so I could look back on the day fondly, but as I think back on it, it seems blurry. Most of the stuff at the altar has completely left my brain. Maybe it’s because I was so nervous and happy and had too much adrenaline running through my system.
“I’m really married?” is something I frequently ask myself.
In any case, the photos look great! My only complaint is that some of the guests weren’t really featured. I suppose I should have made that a bit more of a priority to the photographer.
As soon as I talk to the photographer a little more, I’ll just link you guys to the page and you can order ones that you like! Atkins and I are planning on setting up a Flickr page with our favorites once we go through them all.
I’m sure we can narrow it down to about 500 or so. ;)

New Photos Galore

Posted on June 25th, 2008 by Atkins

I just added a bunch of new pictures to my flickr account. You can get to them by clicking on the photos in my column to the right or by going directly to my flickr page. I’m still waiting for our digital photos from our wedding photographer. As soon as I get those I will add them to flickr and send out a new direct link to that set. Some interesting things I added are pictures of the Camelot room which is the bed and breakfast we stayed at after our wedding. and photos of my work, skinnyCorp.

I’m also working on adding better titles and information for the photos in my flickr account but that’s time consuming and I wanted to make the pictures available to everyone first and then make them nice and organized.

My flickr page is updated pretty much every time I take a photo with my iPhone. As long as I have signal, my photos will go directly to flickr and everyone should be able to see them. I hope you enjoying seeing them.
